Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition provides users with the automatic defense and response mechanisms needed to protect their organisations from harmful viruses, worms, spyware, and adware. Scalable centralised management and response capabilities maximise uptime and minimise the cost of ownership in the enterprise, providing organisations with comprehensive control and protection for network servers and desktops, including those with Windows Vista operating systems.
Symantec AntiVirus clients can be installed as either unmanaged or managed. In an unmanaged Symantec AntiVirus network, each computer is administered individually. In a managed environment, one or more AntiVirus servers are used to administer the AntiVirus system. Each client and server on the network can be monitored, configured, and updated from a single computer running the Symantec System Center. The network can also have servers configured to run reporting, quarantine, and LiveUpdate functions.
Network auditing functionality identifies whether workstations and servers have antivirus software installed. Logical group management tools enable users to create like groups of workstations and servers so they can apply policy settings quickly and easily and manage multiple functional groups from a single parent server.
Quarantine tools available include Quarantine Server and Quarantine Console, which enable the redirection of virus-infected files to a safe area for inspection, and the testing of virus fixes received from Symantec Security Response. Side-effect repair keeps systems operational during security disruptions. Live Update keeps virus and threat information current with regularly scheduled downloads and special virus outbreak responses.
Symantec recommends installing either Symantec AntiVirus server or Symantec AntiVirus client on every computer in the network. See the system requirements below for the types of computers (and operating systems) that can be used for the various AntiVirus roles.
